Plus: 🗑️ Google May Delete You, 🤖 Meet Amazon Q
Read The Information first…or them later
The Information’s journalists get the news that other newsrooms envy. That’s why their reporting on tech, media and finance has been followed by the New York Times, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and dozens of other outlets more than 400 times in the last year.
🛫 Virgin Flight Lifts Off, Powered by Cooking Oil
Virgin Atlantic just took recycling to new heights, literally.
They flew a plane from London to New York using nothing but waste cooking oil and animal fats. Yes, the same stuff you use to make your Sunday roast just powered a transatlantic flight.
But don’t get too excited just yet. These sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) are nine times more expensive to produce than jet fuel.
There are also doubts about the feasibility of sourcing enough waste oil and animal fats.
Despite that, SAFs are seen as a key part of the aviation industry’s decarbonization efforts. They account for 65% of the International Air Transport Association’s plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
🗑️ Google Is Mass Deleting Accounts This Week
If it's been a while since you checked your primary, secondary, or burner Google account, you might want to log in before it's removed forever.
Google will begin removing inactive accounts this week on December 1, along with all of the account's data and contents, which includes everything such as emails, documents, photos, and even calendar events.
Google is doing this because if an account hasn’t been used for an extended period of time, it is more likely to be compromised.
Once an account is hijacked, it can be used for anything from identity theft to a vector of unwanted or even malicious content, like spam.
🤖 Amazon Q: A New ChatGPT-Like Assistant for Work
AWS CEO Adam Selipsky just introduced Amazon Q, a new generative AI assistant designed to boost workplace productivity.
Amazon Q can assist in content generation, including code writing, and streamline tasks like language version upgrades, framework migrations, and security patches.
Selipsky flexed Amazon Q’s capability by sharing an example of how it was used internally to upgrade 1000 applications from Java 8 to Java 17 in just two days.
He said that Amazon Q currently supports Java upgrades, but will soon support transformations for other languages and frameworks as well, as .Net migrations to Linux.
Amazon Q aims to streamline workflows and provide valuable assistance across a range of tasks.
