A lawyer in the Mata v. Avianca, Inc case used ChatGPT to find cases supporting their argument. And what does ChatGPT do? It makes up cases out of thin air! When the lawyer was asked to provide copies of the cases, they turned to ChatGPT again and it made up full details of those cases.

The lawyer even included screenshots of this in their legal filings. When asked if the cases were real, ChatGPT said they were. The judge is not amused and many parties involved may face sanctions.
