India’s cabinet has approved Micron Technology’s $2.7 billion plan for a new semiconductor testing and packaging unit.
The government agreed to production-linked incentives worth $1.34 billion for the plant, which will be built in Gujarat.
This comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the U.S., where he will meet with top American CEOs and be hosted at a state dinner in the White House.
The White House is pressing U.S. chip companies to invest in India and is “encouraged” by the number of firms considering it. Micron’s plans could boost Modi’s vision of making India a semiconductor hub.
