Plus: ⏳ IBM’s $100M Quantum Bet, 🤖 The Core of the AI revolution
Bill Gates says this under-the-radar company will win the AI race
Bill Gates is betting on digital agents to shake up the internet. He said at an event in San Francisco that the big winner in the AI tech wars will have created a personal digital agent. Imagine just chatting with this agent to get information or fulfill tasks instead of going to Google or Amazon. No more typing, just talking!
Gates thinks it could be either Big Tech or a plucky startup that wins. He mentioned Inflection, an “AI studio creating a personal AI for everyone” founded by some big names like Reid Hoffman and Mustafa Suleyman. They released their personal AI, called Pi, in early May.
It’s meant to be a conversational personal assistant and it’s pretty impressive. You can use it to narrow down your thinking on big topics and access it via DM on Instagram, Whatsapp, or by downloading it to your cell phone. There are other AI tools that are better at certain tasks, but Pi has the potential to do much more. Who knows, maybe one day it’ll even do our shopping and reply to our emails for us!

IBM’s 10-Year Plan to Build a 100,000-Qubit Quantum Computer
After taking the record for the largest quantum computing system with 433 qubits late last year, IBM is announcing that at they’re planning to build a quantum computer with 100,000 qubits within the next 10 years. They’re partnering with some universities and throwing $100 million at the problem to make it happen. The idea is that this quantum computer will work together with regular old supercomputers to do some really cool stuff like discovering new drugs and improving battery performance. You know, just your average everyday breakthroughs.
Quantum computing is this really cool way of processing information using the unique properties of particles like electrons and atoms. But right now, quantum computers haven’t been able to do anything that regular supercomputers can’t do. That’s because they don’t have enough qubits and they’re easily disrupted by noise. So researchers are trying to figure out how to make them work better.
IBM isn’t the only company working on this. Google wants to have a million qubits by the end of the decade and some other companies are also working on building big quantum computers. It’s like a race to see who can build the biggest and baddest quantum computer. May the best qubits win!
